Heron Island week five

The main theme for my fifth week on Heron Island has been the relatively bad weather. I've never been anywhere that has such a consistent climate, but the first few days of the week produced more wind than usual and even some rain (gasp!). It made snorkelling not worth while because of the choppier seas, so I gave that a pass for a week.

On Monday and Tuesday I worked my usual 3.30pm shift, with the next two days off. On Wednesday I went fishing in the afternoon and caught a couple of Red Throat Emperors, one of which I had as a tasty dinner. That evening I went down to watch the sunset with a few colleagues and just as it had gone down, we were treated to a rare spectacle. Out of one of the numerous nests along the beach came around 100 hatchlings, all at once. Usually you see them in pairs or on their own, but here were an army of them charging down the beach in what seemed like a mass break-out. What a shame I didn't take my camera!

Thursday was meant to be my day off, but because someone else called in sick, I had to work anyway. I wouldn't lose my time off, but it was a bit annoying. Incidentally, it was the day that marked my one month point of my stay on Heron Island.

On Friday I worked a split shift, which is pretty hard, but Steve (my roommate) and I also got back our TV that day. The way it works on the island is that we can plug our ariel connectors into the wall sockets in our room and that gives us access to the main receiver on the island, which gives us about 10 channels. There are also a DVD and VHS player in the staff bar, which we can play a selection of movies on and then watch in our rooms via seperate TV channels. The films get changed over every now and then, making is somewhat of a substitute for cinema.

The week finished with a couple of 3.30 shifts over the weekend, with Saturday proving to be the longest day as usual. I planned my next trip to Gladstone and phoned Rebekka before letting the week pass away into the next.
